INSAF Center for Defending Freedoms & Minorities organized an electronic symposium via the Zoom app, entitled “Muhamasheen, Between the Reality of Suffering & the Prospects for Change”, with the participation of a number of researchers and interested parties. Where researchers Huda Amin and Mahmoud Rizk delivered two papers on the situation of the Muhamasheen (the marginalized) people in Yemen, and how to overcome the difficulties of this reality and map the features of a positive change in the life of society in the future.
During the event, which was organized by the center on the 15th of July, 2020, and moderated by Dr. Mohamed Al-Mahfali – the center’s executive director – Dr. Al-Mahfali started off by thanking the participants who have shown intreat in this event, and then moved on to providing an overview of the center and the great challenges facing the human rights work in Yemen, and in particular the field of defending the rights of minorities.
In the paper presented by researcher Huda Amin, entitled “The Status of Marginalized Groups in Mukalla Under the Corona Pandemic”, Ms. Amin addressed in general the dire situation that the Muhamasheen community suffers from in Mukalla. She also elaborated on the situation of this group, along with a description of their daily life, as well as their health, humanitarian and social situation.
Researcher Mahmoud Rizk also addressed the tragedy of the marginalized society, and the challenges facing them, indicating the dangerous impact that racism is causing towards this society. He reviewed the potential steps that society could take in its various institutions in order to make a change to this miserable reality, while providing a number of proposals that can help lift the Muhamasheen and integrate them in a positive way in society.
