The nomination file for Yemeni coffee to be included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List has been officially submitted. This effort was achieved through several Yemeni entities, with main support by Al-Qimmah Development Foundation that led by Faris Al-Shaibani and his team, as well as with official support from the ministries of information, culture & tourism, and agriculture & Irrigation.
Yemen’s Ambassador to UNESCO, Dr. Mohammed Jumeh, expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in preparing the nomination file, highlighting the main role played by civil society organizations in supporting these efforts. At the forefront of these organizations is INSAF Center for Rights and Development, where there are also other contributors such as Joodan Development Organization, Noumo Yemen Foundation for Development, and Bathrah for Coffee trade. Their support in preparing the file and promoting Yemeni coffee as a global cultural and economic symbol has been resonated.
Dr. Jumeh emphasized that this nomination represents a significant step toward enhancing Yemeni coffee’s global recognition, especially given Yemen’s historical role as the birthplace of coffee and its spread worldwide through its historic ports, most notably the Port of Mocha.
The follow-up process with relevant UNESCO bodies will continue until the official announcement of Yemeni coffee’s inclusion in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This recognition will further solidify its global status and open new avenues for international support and marketing
